Inside Our Bespoke Process

Inside Our Bespoke Process

Here’s what the bespoke process really looks like for engagement rings and custom jewelry.

|Kiersten Huelsbeck

Designing a bespoke piece of jewelry is unlike walking into a store and choosing something from a display case. It’s a collaborative process, one that begins with a conversation and ends with a piece made entirely for you.

My process is intuitive. I spend time getting to know the wearer, their style, and what they’re drawn to, then use my experience to shape a design that reflects them in a way they may not have fully been able to articulate.

As a Washington DC jeweler working with clients both locally and remotely, my bespoke process is designed to feel personal, transparent, and collaborative from start to finish.

Here’s what that journey looks like working with me.

The First Conversation: Tuning into the Vision

Every bespoke piece starts with a conversation, but it’s more than sharing ideas. It’s an opportunity for me to connect with the person who will wear the jewelry, understand their style, and sense the feeling the piece should evoke.

Some clients arrive with detailed inspiration boards. Others know only that they want something entirely personal but aren’t sure where to begin. Both approaches are a great starting point for discovery.

Through this dialogue, I rely on my intuition as much as experience. I ask questions, get an idea of their style, and begin to sense the design that will feel most natural (sometimes in ways even the client hasn’t imagined). We will chat about the 4C's, natural vs lab diamonds, metal choices, lifestyle considerations and overall energy and direction of the design.

An engagement ring captures one of the most significant moments in a person’s life, while other pieces of jewelry celebrate milestones or serve as gifts to ourselves. In each case, custom design transforms those moments into something tangible and lasting.

Turning Ideas Into Design

Once the vision is clear, I begin shaping it. This stage is where intuition meets craft. I often explore multiple sketches and variations, adjusting proportions, stone placement, and subtle details until the design feels balanced and intentional.

For a bespoke engagement ring, this may mean refining the scale of the center stone, adjusting the band’s curvature, or experimenting with prong and gallery shapes. Every choice is guided by both aesthetic intuition and practical expertise, ensuring the final piece is not just beautiful, but wearable and enduring.

Selecting the Perfect Stone

The gemstone or diamond is the heart of many bespoke designs. Instead of choosing from pre-selected inventory, I source stones specifically for each client, allowing us to find one that feels just right.

I look at:

  • cut, clarity, and proportions

  • color and character

  • overall harmony with the design

For clients in Washington DC, we may be able to review stones in person on a case-by-case basis. For remote clients, I provide detailed imagery and videos so you can evaluate each stone as if you were here. The goal is not simply a beautiful diamond, it’s the right diamond for this unique design.

Bringing the Design to Life

Once the stone and design are finalized, the piece moves into the creation phase. I begin by producing a 3D printed model to ensure the proportions and structure are exactly right. From there, it’s cast in your choice of precious metal and carefully finished by our expert jewelers in New York, transforming the design from concept into a piece you can wear and enjoy every day.

The Final Reveal

The final step is always my favorite, of course.

After weeks of collaboration and design revisions, the finished piece is ready. Seeing a bespoke ring for the first time, is one of the most rewarding moments in my work as a jeweler. Even after all of the renderings and drawings, nothing compares to that final piece.

I choose not to share photos before it is delivered to you, as I want your first gasp to be when you see it in person, not via email. But of course, I will never turn down a photo of you in your final heirloom.

Why Clients Choose Bespoke Jewelry

Family jewelers have been around for centuries. Think back to a time before any of us existed, when you would go to your local goldsmith or jeweler to create a custom piece. Nothing was really premade.

Not everyone knows what bespoke jewelry is, but if you do, you’re considered cool in my books. Maybe it’s time for slow, custom pieces to be the norm again.

A custom piece offers something a ready-made or retail ring cannot. You have the opportunity to be completely intentional with the design and also get to know the person behind the piece. The world now revolves around quick movement and instant gratification, but every decision, from the proportions of the diamond to the curvature of the band, is made with a specific person in mind.

The result is a piece that feels personal from the very beginning and is often designed to become an heirloom, passed down for generations.

Designing Your Bespoke Piece

Every bespoke piece begins with a conversation. I use intuition and experience to guide the design, creating a custom engagement ring or a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry for clients everywhere.

Bespoke jewelry allows every detail to reflect your style and the moment it celebrates. The result is a piece designed to be worn, loved, and passed down for generations.
